Biei's Blue Pond & Shirahige Falls

Aoiike's Changing Seasonal Beauty

The Blue Pond in the town of Biei, is only a forty minute drive from Furano or an hour's drive from Asahikawa, but this town is often missed out by tourists.

The Blue Pond gets its name literally from the bright blue hue of its water. It is not naturally formed, and is a result of the creation of a dam in the wake of an eruption from a nearby volcano on Mount Tokachi. The Blue Pond changes color depending on weather and season. The pond only appears blue when viewed from land, and the color is not found in the water itself.

Shirahige Falls is worth visiting at the same time as it is less than a five minute drive away, in the nearby hot spring town of Shirogane Onsen.
