The Tama River stretches from the foothills of Yamanashi Prefecture to the waters of Tokyo Bay in Ota Ward. The final section of the river, which marks the boundary between Ota and Kawasaki in Kanagawa Prefecture, is a tranquil path perfect for enjoying outdoor pursuits.

Rent a bicycle and ride along the flat trail that follows the riverbank or enjoy a family picnic in one of the many parks. The path is even accessible for those in wheelchairs or using strollers.

In the spring, the trees that burst into bloom in late March and early April make this one of the best spots in the city to enjoy the cherry blossoms without having to suffer the massive crowds of most other famous sites. In the summertime, the riverbank is the perfect area from which to enjoy the seasonal fireworks.

Getting there

The Tama River can be easily accessed from a variety of stations, including Rokugodate on the Keikyu Line and Tamagawa Station on the Tokyu and Meguro Lines.
